Donna and Barry continue a tradition that started in 1958 when Walnut Island opened as a sportsman's retreat for largemouth bass fishing and duck hunting. Lower Currituck Sound and Dowdy's Bay still draw anglers and hunters who want lodging and a hot meal in one stop.

Barry is a U.S. Navy veteran. Donna's family served in the U.S. Air Force. That background shows up in the charity rides and memorial services the restaurant hosts for Gold Star families and local veterans groups.

Today the property welcomes travelers who may never pick up a rod but still want honest seafood, a stocked bar, and lodge rooms with character. Read more about our story on the About page.

On the water

Boat access and pier views remain part of daily life here. Ask staff about seasonal fishing patterns if you plan to combine a lodge stay with time on the sound.
